Avalokiteshvara is a bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who embodies the compassion of all beings. In some Buddhist traditions, he is depicted as having four arms, each of which symbolizes a different aspect of his compassionate nature. The first two arms represent his ability to help and comfort those in need, while the other two symbolize his wisdom and power to end the suffering of all beings. Each hand may hold a different symbolic object, such as a lotus flower, a vase, a prayer bead, or a wheel. In some depictions, the four arms also represent the Four Immeasurable Qualities of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

The four-armed form of Avalokiteshvara is especially revered in Tibetan Buddhism, where he is known as Chenrezig and is considered to be the embodiment of the compassion of all the Buddhas.
